Ann W. Johnson, 85 of Roanoke Rapids passed away Monday, January 26, 2015 at her daughter’s home.

Mrs. Johnson was born December 12, 1929 in Tampa, FL to the late Raymond Wakeley and Wilhelmina Schmidt Wakeley.  She was also preceded in death by her husband: Robert H. Johnson; her daughter: Susan Gay Johnson; her sister: Gertrude Wakeley and her brother: Raymond Wakeley, Jr.

She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Gaston, NC with Pastor Wes Agee.

She moved to Roanoke Rapids, NC twenty two years ago and made it her home.

She became an active member of the community by volunteering of herself to many organizations.

As a lifetime member of the Halifax County Humane Society she helped with the Pet Christmas tree fund raiser every year at the mall.  She also set out several dozen dog banks in various businesses in the county and collected the donations to give to the Halifax Humane Society to help feed and house the abandoned dogs and cats at the shelter.

Ann loved volunteering at Halifax Regional Medical Center at the front desk greeting visitors, and the Roanoke Rapids Women’s Club.

She received a plaque from Governor Mike Easley for the North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service as recognition and appreciation of her volunteerism. She was also the first recipient of the Angel on Earth award from the Roanoke Rapids Women’s Club for her dedication, enthusiasm, energy, and caring for club projects and countless other causes.

Ann was also a member of the Progressive Senior’s Club and loved attending the meetings with her friends and playing Wednesday afternoon Bingo with them.

She was a great role model for her family.

She was not only our mom, but our friend and confident and our shelter during life’s storms.  Ann never met a stranger, just ask anyone in line at Wal-Mart.  She was always grateful and appreciative for everything that was done for her and thanked and loved everyone, always making sure that you ate and didn’t go hungry.

Left to cherish her love and memories are her daughters,  Sheila A. Annazone and her husband Peter of North Fort Myers, FL,  Sandra J. Showalter (Mike) of Roanoke Rapids,  Sharon L. Mohler and her husband Duane of Byron, GA,  Sylvia R. Rice and her husband Rich of Brooksville, FL, her adopted daughter, Betty Shaw (Jimmy) of Roanoke Rapids;  her grandchildren: Susan Anderson of Roanoke Rapids, Dawn Snyder, of Ga., Yvonne Housman of Kentucky and Morgan Wright of Florida; five great grandchildren; number of nieces and nephews; and very, special friends: Robert “Neighbor” Joyner, Nancy Wehner and Ruth Parker; and her beloved special companions: Rebel, Dixie and Baby.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 1, 2015 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Pastor Wes Agee officiating.  Entombment will follow at Crestview Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter Sandy Showalter.
