Mary 'Lois' Hockaday Reynolds

Mary “Lois” Hockaday Reynolds, 89, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Rex Rehab and Nursing Care Center in Apex, NC.  

Lois was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC on November 29, 1924, the daughter of Samuel Wilcox Hockaday and Ethel Waters Hockaday.  She graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School in 1942 and married Bobby Reynolds in October of 1944.  She was employed by VEPCO and later worked for James Saunders Accounting as a secretary.  

Her church family was central to her life.  A long-time member of New Hope United Methodist Church, Lois was an active member of the choir and the United Methodist Women.  Over the years, she also served as church treasurer and on various other committees. 

Mrs. Reynolds is survived by three children, Robert Kenneth (Ken) Reynolds and wife, Kathy of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Cynthia R. Vanderlip and husband, Joe of Matthews, N.C. and Margaret R. Cox and husband, Mark of Cary, N.C.; five grandchildren, Lt. William J. Vanderlip III, (Meagan), Joshua T. Vanderlip, Robert “Bobby” Reynolds, Kyle “Austin” Cox, and Matthew Hayden Cox.  She was predeceased by Bobby Reynolds, her loving husband of 48 years, and brother Thomas Hockaday.  Lois was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend.  She touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.        

The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 4 at New Hope United Methodist Church.  A funeral service to celebrate her life will begin at 11:00 A.M.  Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
