Michael Steven 'Mike' Griffin

Michael Steven “Mike” Griffin of Midlothian, VA went to be with the Lord on Easter Sunday, 16 April 2017.

Mr. Griffin was born on October 22, 1963 in Riverside Hospital, J. Clyde Morris Blvd, Newport News, VA, the son of Donald Lee “Buddy” Griffin and Sylvia Jean Morris.

Michael had the opportunity to accompany his mother, brother and step-father to Germany when he was 11 years old and lived on Patch Barracks for almost four years. During that time, he had many opportunities to travel with the youth group to learn to ski and go to many places in Germany and Austria. He was an expert skier by the time he returned home to Springfield, VA. He also learned to play soccer and football. He was a great rider on a dirt bike. He was a good mechanic and loved to work on cars. He loved riding his motorcycle. He loved to take his children out in the boat tubing, loved NASCAR and Classic Rock and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Michael graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield, VA on 14 June 1982. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University on 16 May 1987 in Richmond, VA. He went to work as a Systems Analyst in Information Systems Division, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in Richmond, VA beginning before his graduation in 1987 until Feb 1997. He then took a job as Applications Programming Manager, Information Technology Division, State Corporation Commission Commonwealth of Virginia in Richmond, VA where he worked for 29 years. He was also hired to work on a contract basis for VDOT working on the Y2K computer problem end of 1999.

He is survived by his son, Michael Thomas Griffin and daughters, Michelle Kathleen Griffin and Rachel Rebecca Griffin; his mother Sylvia Morris Branch and his step-father, Edward A. Branch of Littleton, NC, his brother, Donald Leonidas Griffin and his wife Sandy of Allen, TX; a half-brother, Christopher Neil Griffin; his fiancé, Joni Sands of Midlothian, VA; his nieces, Stephanie Griffin of Plano, TX and Andrea Griffin of Houston, TX

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, 21 April 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Randy Martin and Rev. Sue Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:30 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.
