Shirley Kay Rackley, 61 of Americus Street, Roanoke Rapids died Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Rackley was born October 27, 1952 to Carl Willie Rackley and Ella Rackley.

She was preceded in death by her father; and her cousins: Shirley and James Shay.

When she was born the doctor said she wouldn’t live past her first birthday because she was blind and had cerebral palsy, but she proved them wrong and lived a long happy life. “I, Edward Gardner, had the honor and privilege of getting to know her. She was The 1966 Queen for The Halifax County March of Dimes.”

She is survived by her mother; Ella Rackley; two brothers: James William Rackley and his wife Jeanette of Lenoir, NC and Carl Houston Rackley and his wife Vivian of Roanoke Rapids; nieces and nephews: Janet Rackley, Carla Gardner and her husband Shawn, and Jamie Rackley; her great nephews; Edward Gardner, Joshua Gardner and his wife Beth and Daniel Gardner; her great great niece: Annabelle Gardner and her special caregiver Roxanne High; a very special friend Lillie Mae Dixon..

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with CLM Nelson High officiating.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the home. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
