Laura Bullion Wilder

Laura Bullion Wilder

Laura Bullion Wilder, 73 of Maitland Drive, Roanoke Rapids, went to be with her Lord and Savior Friday, February 14, 2014 at her home.

Laura was born May 18, 1940 in Carroll County, VA to the late Early Paul Bullion and Hazel Lundy Bullion. She was also preceded in death by her brother: Jimmie Bullion.

Laura was a faithful member of Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Middle Adult Sunday School Class.  She was very involved in the Senior Adult Ministries and Women’s Ministries.  She spent many years teaching the children in Sunday school, she truly loved each and every one of them.  Laura loved helping others.  She began her career as a LPN in 1973 and retired in 2001 as a Respiratory Therapist. She also worked at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service for several years. Her love of people and her desire to help others lead her to help begin a support group (Better Breathers Club) for patients and their families suffering from respiratory problems. She was actively involved with Better Breathers Club for 17 years.  She was also very active in the local Relay for Life.   

She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years: Leroy Wilder ; her sons: Charles “Eddie” Bedwell and his wife Barbara of Raleigh, NC, Herman L. Wilder, Jr. and his wife Casey of Manilla, AR, and Eddie Carter of Falcon, NC; her daughter: Sherrie Gupton and her husband Ricky of Roanoke Rapids; her brother: Curtis Bullion and his wife Brenda of Kipling, NC; her grandchildren: Brad Wilder, Ashley Murphy, Leslie Wilder, John Gupton and Samantha Gupton; her great grandchildren: Davis Murphy and Ashlynn Murphy;  also many nieces, nephews and other family.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 17, 2014 at Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Norwood Starling officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  

The family will receive friends Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the church from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.  and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Roanoke Valley Relay for Life/ACS, 1204 Hamilton Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Seretha Jenkins Bullock

Seretha Jenkins Bullock, 78, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014 in Nash General Hospital.

Mrs. Bullock was born in Halifax County to the late Charlie Jenkins and Eva Allen Jenkins.  She was a bank teller for many years.

Surviving is her son, Tommy Bullock and wife, MaryAnn of Nashville, NC; daughter, Lori Stubblefield and husband, Jeff, of Rogersville, TN; brother, Edmund Jenkins and her sister, Jean Reynolds, all of Roanoke Rapids; her grandchildren, Trey Bullock and wife Candice, and Mandy Hewitt and husband, Craig.  Also surviving are three great-grandchildren.  

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Friday, February 21, 2014 from 7-8:30 pm.  Dr. Julian Mills will conduct a graveside service in Richmond Memorial Park at 1717 E. Broad Ave., Rockingham, NC Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 2:00 pm.

Brandon Lewis Blythe

Brandon Lewis Blythe, 25, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at MCV in Richmond.

Brandon was born in Nash County December 28, 1988 to Allen Bruce Blythe and Susan Livingston Gordon.  He was a maintenance mechanic for Boar’s Head Meats.  Brandon loved everyone around him, especially his family, and was fond of four wheeling and the outdoors.  He had a love for fishing, using only a line and hook and could catch more fish than most could catch with a fishing rod.  He loved food and was especially fond of Ranch Dressing.  Most of all, he loved his newborn son, who was born January 3, 2014 and was so in love with his fiancée, and mother of his child.  Brandon is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Charles Lewis Blythe; uncles, Charles Blythe, Jr. and Steven Randall and his cousin, Lindsey Michelle Blythe. 

Surviving is his fiancée, Heather Leigh Winters of Chester, VA; son, Connor Cash Blythe; mother, Susan L. Gordon and husband, “Bumpy”, of Littleton; father, Allen Bruce Blythe and wife, Angela, of Carson, VA; paternal grandmother, Katherine Kelly Blythe of Gasburg, VA; maternal grandmother, Marlene Mashburn of Star, NC; maternal grandfather, Billy Ray Livingston and wife, Janie, of Candor, NC; great grandmother: Essie Mashburn of Star, NC; three sisters, Michelle Lynn Williams and her children, Madison and Kaitlyn, all of Roanoke Rapids, Jennifer Williams Harris and husband, Todd and their children, Taylor and Dallas, all of Roanoke Rapids, and Lisa Marie Rightmyer, of Greenville; special aunt, Rhonda Blythe Ayscue and husband, Dwight, of Oxford; uncles, Kevin Blythe, Sr. and wife Sherri, of Gasburg, Jeff Blythe and wife Heather of Roanoke Rapids, and Chris Robinson and wife Angie, of Roseboro; cousins, Steven Blythe, Kevin Blythe, Jr., Jonathon Arnold, Rebecca Blythe, Matt Blythe, Caroline Robinson, Cassie Robinson, and Christopher Robinson, Jr.  Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Rev. Randy Martin will conduct a memorial service at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Tuesday, February, 25, 2014 at 1:00 P.M..  The family will receive friends prior to service at the funeral home from 11:00 – 12:30 P.M.

Evelyn Elaine Freuler, 85, passed away at her home Sunday, February 23, 2014.

Mrs. Freuler was born in Franklin County, NC April 20, 1928 to the late Hubert Layton and Bernice Morton Layton.  She was a member of New Life Church of Christ and loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was known to them as Mimi.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Freuler was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Gilbert Freuler, Sr.; sister, Doris Long, and brothers, Wesley and Brantley Layton.  

Surviving is her son, Willie Gilbert “Bill” Freuler, Jr. and wife, Debbie of Aiken, SC; daughters, Kaye Cooke and husband, Ronnie, and Shirley Smith and husband, Bobby, all of Halifax; brother, Thomas Allen Hayes of South Korea; six grandchildren, Jeff Freuler, Kelly Hankey and husband, Paul, Jason Cooke and wife, Heather, Kevin Cooke and special friend, Angie, Bobbie Jo Smith, and Kirk Smith; six great-grandchildren, Anna Freuler, Sierra Smith, Halie Moseley, Cody Cooke, Bryce Cooke, and Ashlyn Cooke.  Also surviving is her special lifelong friend, Helen B. Smith.

The family would to extend a special thanks to Mrs. Freuler’s caregivers, Shakee Battle, Kim Watson, and Tonya Mallory.

Garland Wilson Wheeler

Garland Wilson Wheeler, 88 of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the home of his daughter, but was a longtime resident of Madison Street and Daniel Street .

He was born April 5, 1925 in Halifax County to the late Garland Wheeler and Sarah Carpenter Wheeler.  He was also preceded in death by his grandparents: Noah and Ida Wheeler of Jackson, NC and Frank and Mary Carpenter of Valentines, VA; a wife of 45 years Annie Lee Braswell Wheeler; two infant children Ronney Lee and Cynthia Gale Wheeler from his marriage to Katherlee “Kitty” Tanner Epps; his sisters: Mary Nellie Wheeler Seward and her husband Erby C. and Ida Elizabeth “Liz” Fitts and her husband Oliver; her brothers: Leon Earl Wheeler and Harry Gene Wheeler; his brother-in-law: Fletcher “Peter Bill” Braswell.

Mr. Wheeler was a longtime member of Roanoke Rapids Church of God. He retired from Champion International after 35 years of service as a paper tender, and also went to Canada as a representative from the local papermill in developing a new paper machine and was a member of the Old Timers Retirement Club. .  He was also employed by Wrenn Funeral Home.  Mr. Wheeler also served his country in the US Navy on the USS Plymouth (Alva) and the USS Spangenberg, and the National Guard.

Mr. Wheeler is survived by his daughter: Linda Lee Wheeler Carawan and her husband Kenneth; a son: Garland Wilson “Cheyenne” Wheeler, Jr. and his wife Janice all of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren: Kenneth Hunter Ross Carawan, Samantha Lee Carawan both of Roanoke Rapids; his brother: Franklin D. “Frank” Wheeler and his wife Joan of Weldon; his sister-in-laws: Inez C. Wheeler of Roanoke Rapids and Marguerite B. Wheeler of Halifax; several nieces and nephews and Sarah Hatchell Cooper Wheeler of Roanoke Rapids;  .

Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at the Roanoke Rapids Church of God with Rev. Michael Mooneyham officiating. Burial will follow in Old Cedarwood Cemetery with Military honors.  The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at the church from 6:00 – 8:30 P.M. and other times at the home of his daughter.

Sylvia Ann “Reecie” Barnes, 75, died Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Halifax Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Barnes was born January 14, 1939 in Bertie County to the late Willie Hill Clark and Dennie Mae Simmons Clark.  She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was strong minded, strong willed and always very friendly.  She loved her church and church family.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Dupree Barnes and her daughter, Vonda Paige.

Surviving are her children, Vicky Casper and husband, Kenneth of Franklinton, NC, Sheryl Biggerstaff and husband, Chris, and Robert Barnes, both of Roanoke Rapids; brother, Fred Clark of Melbourne, FL; sisters, Ellen Barnes of Conway, NC and Doris Keel of Ahoskie, NC; grandchildren, Julie Pearcey, Brian Biggerstaff, Jamie Marie Graham, and Robert Michael Barnes; great-grandchildren, Ashton Smith, Hailey Lambert, Blake Graham, Kaitlyn Graham, and Cameron Barnes.  Also surviving is her great great-granddaughter, Gabby Smith.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, Saturday, March 1, 2014 from 7-8:30 pm.  Pastor Annie Marie Smith will conduct funeral services, Sunday, March 2, 2014 at the Church of Jesus Christ at 2:00 pm.  Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Virgil Laster Allen, 84, died Friday, February 28, 2014 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Allen was born in Halifax County, January 1, 1930, to the late Lee Allen and Dora Love Allen.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother.  He loved to visit the elderly and those in need of friendship, and enjoyed helping others.. 

Surviving is his wife, Deanie Allen; children, Kim Allen Kidd, Keith Allen, and Jean Allen Landen, all of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Dorothy Allen Waters of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Alan Kidd, Blake Danielle Kidd, Jason Allen Landen and Jessica L. Watts; great-grandchilden, Nathan Watts and Bristol Faith Landen.  Also surviving are many loving nieces and nephews. 

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, Sunday, March 2, 2014 from 6-8 pm, and all other times at his daughter, Kim Kidd’s, home.  Rev. Gladys Mildred DeBerry Joyner

Gladys Mildred DeBerry Joyner, 85 of Williams Street, Roanoke Rapids died Monday, March 3, 2014 at Tarboro Nursing Home in Tarboro.

Mrs. Joyner was born May 4, 1928 in Halifax County to the late Noah P. and Mirtle Evans DeBerry.  She was also preceded in death by her husband Willie Lee “Red” Joyner; two sisters: Hazel Carter and Catherine Dickens; her brother: Calvin DeBerry.

Mrs. Joyner was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She is survived by her son: Rev. Dennis Joyner and his wife Nancy ; her granddaughter: Amy Lynch and her husband Kevin; her great grandchildren: Matthew Lynch and Mary Elizabeth Lynch all of Roanoke Rapids and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 7, 2014 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Dennis Joyner officiating.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the funeral home and other times at 145 Valley Drive.

Harry Edward King, 86, of White Plains, VA, peacefully answered God’s call to eternal rest on Saturday, March 1, 2014 in his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. King was born January 7, 1928 in Brunswick County, VA to the late Robert W. and Nettie Ruth Jones King.  He was preceded in death by; his brother Len, Frank, Robert, Jr., Earnest, Gilbert, Herman, and his sister Mildred.  

He was owner and operator of King’s Service Center of White Plains, VA which serves Brunswick County and the surrounding area for 45 years.  

Harry leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 68 years, Virgie Carroll King; three daughters, Jean Singletary of Fort Washington, MD, Judy Bell of Louisburg, NC, and Renee Wilson of Littleton, NC.  He had six grandchildren, Henry Singletary, Jr., Lavonne Nelson, Tiffany Briscoe, Natasha Belch, Jennifer Shelton, and Daniel Edward Stroud.  He had sixteen great grandchildren.

Melissa Kaye Yarboro Edwards, 43, passed away at Halifax Regional Health Center, Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

Melissa was born in Charleston, SC March 17, 1970 to Willie Laverne Yarboro, Sr. and Debra Kaye Matthews.  She was loved by all and was a loving mother to her children.  Melissa is preceded in death by her mother, Debra Kaye Matthews.

Surviving are her sons, Dustin Mark Mountford and Nick Edwards, both of Roanoke Rapids; her daughter, Emli Edwards of Clayton; father, Willie L. Yarboro, Sr. and wife, Patricia, of Littleton; brothers, Willie L. Yarboro, Jr., Brian Taylor, both of Roanoke Rapids, and Chris Taylor of Longview, TX; step-father, William Larry Thorne of Clayton; finance, Tim Moseley of Roanoke Rapids.  Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.    

The family will celebrate Melissa’s life Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Community Freewill Baptist Church at 2:00 pm officiated by Rev. Larry Matthews.. They will receive friends beginning at 1:00 pm, prior to service, at the church.  

The family has requested that flowers be sent to Community Freewill Baptist Church, 1506 Washington Ave., Weldon, NC  27890.

Dorothy Mae Artese

Dorothy Mae Artese, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at her home. 

Mrs. Artese was born August 26, 1921 in Halifax County to the late Curtis and Elizabeth Harris Moseley. 

Mrs. Artese was a retired bookkeeper with the Army Corps of Engineers. 

She really enjoyed her family and friends, keeping up with all of her extended family.  She dearly loved family reunions.  In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Michael Anthony Artese, Jr.; and her brothers, Woodrow Moseley, Clarence Moseley, Donald Moseley, and William Moseley.

Mrs. Artese is survived by her sisters, Alice Gums of Roanoke Rapids; and Patricia Felts and husband Ronald of Jacksonville, FL;  her caregivers, Jerry Moseley and wife Grace; and Sandra Inge and husband Earl all of Roanoke Rapids; and her step-daughter Martha Gene Krehely and her husband Don of Pensacola, FL.  Mrs. Artese is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Cheri Parnell and Community Home Care and Hospice and also to her other caregivers, Beverly Norman; Rakies Barber; Connie Jones; Louise Broady; and Ja-Onna Jacobs.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 3:00 PM at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Randy Martin officiating, burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 prior to the service at the funeral home and all other times at the home of Alice Gums of 726 Raleigh Street.

William Walter Eason Jr.

William Walter Eason, Jr., 85, passed away Monday, March 17, 2014.

Mr. Eason was born July 3, 1928 in Halifax County to the late William Walter Eason, Sr. and Jennie Mae Carter Eason.  A jack of all trades, Bill enjoyed woodworking, fishing, gardening and golf.  He was an avid reader and world traveler.  Over the years, Bill and his wife, Charlotte, enjoyed many hours traveling the countryside as genealogists.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Eason was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Davis Eason and sisters, Ruby Weiss, Sally Workman, Annie Freuler, Dorothy Bland, and Mary Moore. 

Surviving are his daughters, Willa Eason Moyer, and husband, Robert, of Raleigh, Beverly Viverette, and husband, Don, of Sharpsburg, and Shelia Wheeler, and husband, Terry, of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Dolly Deaver, and husband, Bob, of Louisville, KY; grandchildren, Robert Chadwick Moyer, and wife, Holly, of Jacksonville, FL, Kristi Dillard, and husband, Jeremy, of Raleigh, Scott Viverette of Sharpsburg, Laura Pair, and husband, Joseph, of Roanoke Rapids, John Viverette, and wife, Brooke, of Sharpsburg, and Collin Wheeler of Morehead City.  Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Logan Cutright, Jordan Dillard, Carter Pair, and Finley Grace Pair.

Moses McKinley King Sr.

Moses McKinley King, Sr., 91 years old, of 179 Twin Lane, Gaston, North Carolina, passed away peacefully March 12, 2014 surrounded by family and friends.  

He resided in Trenton, New Jersey for over fifty years.  Moses was born June 27, 1922 in Gaston, North Carolina.  He is survived by four sons, Moses M. King, Jr., Gary R. King, Richard A. King, and Bruce R. King, and one daughter, Fahamisha Amkajinaki.  He leaves to carry on his legacy, twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and numerous loving nephews, nieces, and friends.  

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service is being held April 4, 2014 at New Salem Baptist Church, 316 Union Street, Trenton, New Jersey at 1:00 pm.

Mr. Reid was born December 11, 1936 in Halifax County, NC to the late Johnny Reid and Mamie Jenkins Reid.

Mr. Reid is survived by his wife: Vikki Reid of Littleton; three daughters: Shea Arthur and her husband Harold of Roanoke Rapids, Robin Kirkman of Beaufort, SC and Karen Weber (Eric) of Roanoke Rapids; his sister: Joyce King Wiggins of Bradley Point, VA; five grandchildren and several special nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Jimmy Lambert officiating. The family will receive friends following the service and other times at the home of Dail Allen.

Tommy 'Tomdoddle' Gerald Lamm

Tommy “Tomdoddle” Gerald Lamm, 54, of Littleton died Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville.  

Mr. Lamm was born June 20, 1959 in Wilson County to the late Thomas Lamm and Helen McKeel Lamm.  Tommy loved cars and had been a great mechanic since his teenage years, and dearly loved his children.  

Tommy is survived by his step-mother, Mae Selby of Gasburg, Va; his son Tommy Lamm and wife Tammy and their son Zachary;  his daughter Tammy Elizabeth Lamm; all of Roanoke Rapids.  Two sisters, Cathy Lamm Matthews of Halifax; and Debbie Lamm Pearson and husband Jimmy of Wilson.  His niece Shelby Flynn and husband Erron; and his nephew Thomas Gregory, all of Roanoke Rapids.  Tommy is also survived by his good friend, Kenny Cullom of Halifax.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the service at the funeral home.

Frances Eubanks Stone, 90, died Monday, March 31, 2014 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Sue Owens officiating.  The family will receive friends Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.  at the funeral home.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon.

Robert Suiter 'Pete' Glasgow

Robert Suiter “Pete” Glasgow, 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Halifax County on March 29, 2014.

Pete was born on October 30, 1923, on the same family farm where he lived until his death, to Jeanette Cooper Glasgow and Santa C. Glasgow.  He had deep ties to the earth, farming and gardening the land until recently.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ethel Alston Glasgow; his sister Mildred Rose (Winfield) of Stuart’s Draft, Va.; his daughters Charlotte Wallace (Tommy) of Halifax; Pam Waters (Rick) of Marietta, Ga.; Robin Maxwell (Dwight) of Liberty; seven grandchildren, Barbara Lingle, James Atkins, Forrest Waters, Brad Smith, Leanne Waters, Nicki Smith, and Phillip Smith; four great-grandchildren, Christian Lingle, Kaylee Lingle, Caiden Waters, and Mindy Crawford.  He is preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters, and a daughter, Sandy Glasgow.

Funeral services will be held at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, April 2, 2014 with Rev. Billy Howell presiding.   Visitation to begin one hour earlier, at 1:00 PM.

The family wishes to especially thank Pete’s devoted caregivers in his final years of life.
