Doris Lee Browning Rose was born in January, 1931, to the parents, William Wallace Browning and Thelma Lucas Browning Hawkins.

Rose ScanDo

She was raised in Aurelian Springs and grew up on the Farm of her grandmother, Carrie Jenkins.

She attended Graded School locally and graduated in 1948 from William R. Davie High School.

Doris married the love of her life, Homer Grady “Fuzzy” Rose, that same year.

After many years of being a Stay-At-Home-Mom, she began public work as a Cashier/Bookkeeper for Catos when it was on Roanoke Avenue and then as an Outpatient Registrar for Roanoke Rapids Hospital.

Later, she became Director of Admissions at Greensville Memorial Hospital in Emporia, Virginia, where she worked until her retirement in 1993.

Doris proudly worked to achieve her Associates Degree in Business Administration during that tenure.

For many years, Doris and her husband attended Bethlehem Baptist Church on Littleton Highway, and they delighted in being a part of such a “at home fellowship” of lifelong friends and memories.

She served with the WMU and Ladies’ Circle Groups, taught Youth Aged classes and was VBS Director for many years.

Doris and her husband also served as Leaders for the Halifax County King’s 4-H Club, where the neighborhood youth attended.

In later years, Doris and her husband attended Quankie Baptist Church on Highway 48, where her membership still stands.

She sang in the Choir and in various Groups, certainly enjoying their many Contatas.

She also typed and printed the Weekly Church Bulletins for several years.

Doris and her husband donated much time and the use of their RV to travel and attend Mission Trips sponsored by their Church, where they were blessed by helping others. They formed great friendships and enjoyed good times.

Her Quankie Family became an important part of her life.

Doris and her husband found pleasure traveling in their RV, north to New York and Pennsylvania, south to Mississippi and Alabama, and west to Wyoming and Colorado, to name only a few.

They also spent much time around the campfire with family and friends at Bugg’s Island.

Doris loved to cook all of her years, even in her later years, directing her sitters with recipes. They were such great helpers.

Doris’ other passion was clothes shopping. She was a trendy dresser and kept up with the latest fashions.

Doris Rose is survived by her children, Donald Whitfield Rose and his wife Sherry (Craft), Brenda Lee Rose Mason and her husband Doug, and Beverly Jean Rose Schmidt and her husband Robert, her grandchildren, Emily Rose Zivot and her husband Matt, Matthew Whitfield Rose and his wife Rune, Abby Rebecca Rose and her friend Dennis, Christopher Drew “Kit” Rose and his wife Bentley, Jimmy David Shaw III (deceased), Marcus Gregory Shaw and his wife Christina, Phillip Douglas Mason and his wife Stewart, Jennifer Schmidt Glass and her husband Dave, Jeffrey Robert Schmidt and his wife Megan, her great grandchildren, Aubrey Savannah Rose, Kaylee Elizabeth Rose, Elizabeth Renee Shaw, Connor Bayley Shaw, Joshua Christopher Glass, Kaitlyn Rose Glass, her step great grandchildren, Few Rose, Jacob Ty Philpott, Kendall Rayne Philpott, and one great great grandchild, Easton Jayce Shaw. Doris is aslo survived by a brother Winifred Justice Browning and his wife Shirley, a sister Jane Hawkins Norwood and her husband Michael, her uncle Maurice Neal Lucas, and his wife Rosa, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, her lifelong friends, Stella Mullins and Christine Walker, and many others who have shared their lives through the years.

The family also wishes to acknowledge the dedication of those who have shared many days and nights of the recent years with “Mrs. Rose, Ms. D, or Ms. Doris, as she was fondly called by Sophia Tucker, Shelby Bailey, Christine Revis, Evelyn Bowser, and Frances Alston.

You were there when she needed you, and for that we are grateful beyond words.

Doris also leaves behind her loving and precious dog, Sweet Sassy Rose. Doris would have been 85 years old in January.

She died peacefully on October 28.

She talked of the Depression Years and growing up on the farm. She was most proud of her achievements in school and her graduating as Valedictorian of her class.

Doris had deep convictions about her faith and attending church, and shared her story of her Conversion at a Tent Revival in Roanoke Rapids.

She also raised her family as proudly as she could and urged them to aspire, “Make something of yourself.”

Doris never loved anyone more than she did her High School Sweetheart, “Fuzzy”. She lost that earthly partner in 1998; they had shared over 50 years. Now, she rests in Heaven with Jesus and is along the side of her Soulmate again.
