Wanda Kay Bailey

Wanda Kay Bailey, 53, died Monday, December 5, 2016, at her home on Marshall St.

Kay was born in Halifax County, October 13, 1963, to the late Bernard Louis Harris and Peggy Moore Harris.

She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and sister. Her greatest joy was becoming a “Grandma” to her grandson, Mason. She also loved spending time with her family, especially at the beach.

In addition to her parents, Kay was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Steven Bailey, II; step-father, E.V. Wilson and step-mother, Jean Harris.
Surviving are her daughter, Jessica Bailey Council and husband, Greg and grandson Mason; brother, Bernard Lynn Harris and friend, Tish Worsham, both of Roanoke Rapids; sisters, Shawn Haislip and husband, Mike of Roanoke Rapids, and Debra Jean Pilkington of Smithfield. Also surviving are her nieces and nephews, Amber Haislip, Miranda Haislip, Shannon Hobbs, Nikki Stanley, Kris Harris, Todd Harris, Justin Harris and Marvin Stanley.
The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Thursday, December 8, 2016, from 6-8 pm. and other times at 1114 Jefferson Street.

Rev. Randy Martin and Rev. Jimmy King will conduct funeral services at the chapel in Hockaday Friday, December 9, 2016 at 2:00. Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
The family request for ones attending Kay’s services, please wear bright colors to celebrate and honor her life.

Martha 'Red' Elizabeth Johnson Boone

Martha “Red” Elizabeth Johnson Boone, 75, of Watering Pond Road, Pink Hill, NC, formerly of Roanoke Rapids passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

She was born in Southampton County, VA to the late James Pressley Johnson and Sallie Rebecca Goodman Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James “Pete” Monroe Boone; her sisters, Nettie Mae Conner, Norene Harris, Ann Hargrave, Loretta Boyd and Sallie Ann Lewis.

“Red” loved to read, yard selling and hummingbirds.

She is survived by her sons, Joseph B. Wood, Jr. of Pink Hill and James M. Boone and fiancé Jenny Wooten of Smithfield; her sister, Louise McLaughlin of Goochland, VA; her grandchildren, Kristy Nicole Wood, Stacie Jo Wood, Holly Diane Wood, Olivia Monroe Boone and James Mason Boone; her great-grandchildren, Olivia Claire Eadus and Dexter Brian Bunch; a special niece and guardian, Tammy Felver and husband Chlp of Goldsboro and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 10, 2016 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

Dorothy Elizabeth Bradley, 85, of Halifax passed away Thursday, December 8, 2016 at her daughter’s home.

She was born January 3, 1931 in Wake County to the late James Judson Kearney and Arelia Jordan Kearney. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Milton Bradley; her sister, Frances Harris.

A longtime clerk of Halifax, Mrs. Bradley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved sewing, crocheting, quilting and woodworking. She was a longtime member of Halifax United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Pike and her husband Herbert, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids, Pam Bradley and Laura Godley and her husband Joey both of Enfield; her grandson, G.C. Allsbrook of Scotland Neck; her great-grandson, Nicolas Allsbrook; her brothers, James Kearney and his wife Mary of Littleton and Charles Kearney of Greenville; a special niece, Susan Harris; many nieces and nephews. The family would also like to thank her caregiver, Cheryl Dickens and her nurse, Tammy Rodwell.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 P.M. Sunday, December 11, 2016 at Halifax United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Formo officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 P.M. Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

Rosalyn Smith Forsyth, 82, died at her home Monday, December 12, 2016.

Rosalyn was born in Franklin County, NC, December 17, 1933, to the late John Hazel Smith and Bertha Taylor Smith. She loved God, Church, Home and Family. In addition to her parents, Rosalyn was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie E. Forsyth; sister, Hazel Gilliam and her brothers, Curtis and Willis Smith.
Surviving are her children, Debra Forsyth Daniel, and husband, Steve, of Raleigh, Charles Richard Forsyth and wife, Cynthia Pittard of Louisburg, Cedric Scott Forsyth and wife, Ann, of Roanoke Rapids, and Jeff Forsyth of Raleigh; sister, Nancy Cooke and husband, Willis, of Rolesville; grandchildren, Brent Daniel, Kimberly Bender and husband, Will, Scott Forsyth and wife, Catherine, Cheryl Yoacham and husband, Chris and Andy Forsyth. Also, surviving are her great grandchildren, Joshua, Gail, Christian and Alicia Forsyth, Kaley and Cade Daniel, Forrest, Allison and Elizabeth Bender.
Rev. Rochele Bailey will conduct funeral services Thursday, December 15, 2016, at 2:00 at Smith United Methodist Church with interment to follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service beginning at 1:00 pm.

Faye Deane Erwin Hux, 76, died Saturday, December 24, 2016, at her home.

Mrs. Hux was born in Roanoke Rapids, April 1, 1940, and is the daughter of the late Crawford S. and Cota P. Erwin. She was a 1958 Roanoke Rapids High School graduate and a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She worked at JP Stevens and Bibb for 38 years, and later, at Walmart as a front end cashier for 11 years. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hux was preceded in death by her sons, Kerry A. Hux and Reagan R. Hux.
Surviving are her husband, the love of her life, Robert L. Hux, of the home, Stuart Hux of the home, and Curt Hux and wife, Rosita, of Springfield, VA; sisters, Benisha E. Clary and Iris E. Faucett of Roanoke Rapids, and Gail E. Fuller and husband, Hugh, of Cary; 8 grandchildren, Michael Hux and wife Andi, Britteny Faye Hux, Timothy Hux, Kerry Nicole Lewter, Jennifer Hux, Fabio Hux, Christian Hux and Gage Hux; great grandchildren, Colby Hux, Logan Hux, and after February, Riley Nicole Hux. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Rev. Jimmy King will conduct a service of remembrance at Good News Baptist Church Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends, after the service, at Good News Baptist where lunch will be served. Friends are also welcomed at the home of Iris E. Faucett, 721 E. 12th Street, Roanoke Rapids.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Pastor Maurice Reed Wheat

Pastor Maurice Reed Wheat, 80, of Roanoke Rapids was welcomed home by his Lord and Savior Monday, December 26, 2016 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Pastor Wheat was born on September 13, 1936 in Bedford County, VA to the late Justin Carl Wheat and Alice Hawkins Wheat. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James Carl Wheat.

Pastor Wheat served his country as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 – 1956. He attended Piedmont Bible College in Winston-Salem from 1959 – 1964 where he received a Bachelor of Religious Education. He founded Calvary Baptist Church in Rural Hall, NC and was their Pastor from 1968 – 1972. In June of 1972 he went to work for the US Postal Service in Roanoke Rapids where he spent 24 years. He received an Honorary Doctorate in 2003 from Bread of Life International Bible Correspondence Institute. He also taught the Bible Class at Cornerstone Christian School from 2005 – 2009. Pastor Wheat also served the congregation of Central Baptist Church for 44 years and served as a minister for 57 years.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Isa Helen Keene Wheat; his children, David and Suzanne Wheat, Sharon and Graham Taylor, Pansy and Jimmy Olsen and Joy and Wesley Pepper; his grandchildren, Emily Wheat, Jamie Olsen, Bud and Chera Olsen, Benjamin and Karin Wheat, Amber McCoy, Charlie McCoy, Phillip Wheat, Justin and Anna Olsen, Joshua and Ericka Olsen, Jordan Olsen, Jodie Olsen, Jay Olsen and Wesley Pepper; his great-grandchildren, Brandi Bedgood, Juddson Olsen, Chloe McCoy, Amelia Wheat, Emma Olsen and Haley Olsen.

A Celebration Service for God’s Faithfull Servant will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Central Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery with TAPS being performed by his grandson, Wesley Pepper. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 – 12:30 P.M.

The family would like to give special thanks to Kevin Cox, The Staff at Duke University Medical Center, The Cardiology Department at Duke and Community Home Health and Hospice.

Wayne King Drewery, 74, passed away peacefully in his home Saturday, December 24, 2016.

Wayne was born in Halifax County, March 3, 1942, to the late Caudie Wiggins and Lavelle King Drewery. He loved hunting and watching Nascar racing. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his sister, Janet Drewery Seymour and his lifelong partner, Elaine Hunt.

Surviving are his daughter, Amy L. Drewery Hunt of the home; brother, Caudie Martin Drewery, Sr. and wife, Inez, of Gumberry, NC and his sister, Yvonne Drewery Coyne and husband, Joseph, of Roanoke Rapids. Also surviving are 10 nieces, 2 nephews, 17 great nieces, 7 great nephews, 12 great-great nieces, and 11 great-great nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Services from 6-8 pm. Frederick Hill will conduct a graveside service at Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon Friday, December 30, 2016 at 2:00 pm.

Wayne King Drewery, 74, passed away peacefully in his home Saturday, December 24, 2016.

Mary Driggers Price, 52, passed away Monday, January 2, 2017 at Vidant Health Center in Greenville, NC.

Mary was born in Waldorf, MD, March 29, 1964, to the late Willard Eldon and Betty Ann Meadows Driggers. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by two sons, Christopher James Price and Justin Scott Price. She loved her children and her seven grandchildren more than anything in the world. She will be remembered for her kind heart and friendly demeanor.
Surviving are her significant other, Tony Love; brother, Sammy McKeel and wife, Katherine; sister Barbara Driggers; daughter, Krista Ann Gray and husband, John Andrew; son, Jonathan Price and wife, Kimberly and daughter-in-law, Lindsay Elizabeth Sherrod.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Kimberly Price in Whitakers, NC.
The family will have a private burial.

Richard Linwood Carter, 86, died Sunday, January 1, 2017, at Scotland Manor Healthcare Center in Scotland Neck.

Richard was born in Halifax County, June 27, 1930, to the late Enoch Marvin and Lorena Dickens Carter. He worked in the paper mills in Roanoke Rapids for many years and was a veteran of the United States Army. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Edith R. Carter and two brothers, Jacob and James Owen Carter.

Surviving are his son, Merv Carter and wife, Miya, of Greensboro, NC; three nieces, Catherine Metzger of Wake Forest, NC, Sarah Wester of Henderson, NC and Paula Martin of Altharetta, GA; one nephew, James O.Carter, Jr. of Raleigh; sister-in-law, Margaret Carter of Goldsboro; granddaughter, Lisa Vivian Johnson and husband, Jarrod, and great granddaughter, Fiona Johnson, all of Knightdale, NC.

Dr. Julian Mills will conduct a graveside service at Crestview Memorial Cemetery beginning at 1:00 pm Thursday, January 5, 2017. The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, prior to the graveside service, from 11:30am to 12:30pm.

Virgie Carroll King

Virgie Carroll King, 88, of White Plains, VA, peacefully answered God’s call to eternal rest on Thursday, January 5, 2017, in her home surrounded by family.

Mrs. King was born, July 26, 1928, in Brunswick County to the late Harvey C. Carroll and Mamie Hall Carroll. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Harry Edward King, and her brother, Kelly Carroll.
Virgie leaves behind to cherish her memory, three daughters, Jean Singletary of Fort Washington, MD, Judy Bell of Louisburg and Renee Wilson of Littleton; six grandchildren, Henry Singletary, Jr., Lavonne Nelson, Tiffany Briscoe, Natasha Belch, Jennifer Shelton and Daniel Stroud; 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She also leaves behind a sister, Cleto Parrott and brother, Hugh Carroll.
The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 6-8 pm. Revs. John Alford and Mark Wethington will conduct funeral services in the chapel at Hockaday Thursday, January 12, 2017, at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Clara Elizabeth Taylor Walker

Clara Elizabeth Taylor Walker, 89, died Friday, January 6, 2017, in Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Clara was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, December 29, 1927, to the late Willie and Dollie Mavis Hinton Taylor. She loved serving the Lord and was a lifelong member of Lakeview Baptist and Victory Baptist Churches. She had a talent for sewing and was considered a “professional seamstress” and she also loved baking. In addition to her parents, Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred Columbus “W.C.” Walker; brothers, Isaac and Marvin Taylor; sister, Marie Whichard, and her grandson, Cameron Osborne.
Surviving are her daughters, Naomi W. Smith and husband, Melvin, of Roanoke Rapids, and Torie W. Osborne and husband, Robert, of Halifax; granddaughter, Erin Smith; special friends, Debbie and Michael Morris, Becky and Hubert Allen, Allie Faye Ivey, Adele Fox and Johnnie and Margaret Lassiter. Also surviving are her sister-in-law, Avalene Cullom and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Thursday, January 12, 2017, from 6-8 pm. Pastor Jeremy Kobernat will conduct funeral services at Victory Baptist Church Friday, January 13, 2017 at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Hattie Mae Bogart 83, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, in Virginia Beach, Va.

Hattie was born in Roanoke Rapids on October 22, 1933 and worked for the Daily Herald and 2nd Street Amusement Park in Roanoke Rapids for several years.

After moving to Virginia Beach she was owner and operator of Bogie’s Bar in Norfolk, Va. and retired from Tidewater Transit.

She was an avid card player and loved her soap operas.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Fanny Francis Turner, her father, William C. Lewis, her brother, William Lewis, and her aunt, Betty Jane Turner.

She is survived by her son, Jerry L. Bogart and his wife, Diane of Virginia Beach, Va., four grandchildren, Terri M. Bogart, of Virginia Beach, Va., Mary E. Bogart Reynolds of Flowery Branch, Georgia, Jerry L. Bogart of Virginia Beach, Va., Michael L. Bogart of Virginia Beach, Va., three great grandchildren, Jason A. Bogart, Joshua L. Reynolds, and Ryan L. Reynolds, a special niece, Sylvia Jenkins and husband Wayne of Roanoke Rapids, NC., and two special friends, Dottie Sloan of Norfolk, Va. and Elia (Gerry L.) Letizia of Virginia Beach.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 14 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. and Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 14 in the chapel at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with the Rev. Dennis Joyner officiating.

Burial will follow in Crestview Cemetery and at Hattie's request, attendees are encouraged to wear casual clothes.

Shirley Fisher

Shirley Diane Carlisle Fisher transitioned from this life on January 16th, 2017, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and loving sister.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Horace Ray Fisher Sr., her parents James Acey and Mary Finch "Pig" Carlisle, and her brother, Daniel Hosten Carlisle.

Diane was born in 1939 in Roanoke Rapids and graduated from William R. Davie High School in 1958. She met and married Horace Fisher in 1959 and started a family. She had three children (Ray, Craig and Michael) and worked for J.P. Stevens as a weaver until she retired in 1991 after the death of her husband. She adopted her first two grandchildren, Lacey and Josh, and raised them as a single parent. Diane loved cruising to Mexico and Hawaii. She was an active member of the Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness church for more than 40 years and loved her church family.

She leaves behind many loved ones and friends including her children: Ray Fisher and his husband, James Brave, of West Sacramento, CA; Craig Fisher of Pamlico, NC; Michael Fisher and partner, Angela Jenkins, of Roanoke Rapids; Her grandchildren: Lacey Fisher of Roanoke Rapids; Joshua Fisher and his partner, Ardella Delamora, of Roanoke Rapids; and Haley-Brooke Fisher of Roanoke Rapids; Her sisters, Sandra Tomlinson of Roanoke Rapids who was also her primary caregiver and best friend; and Doris Marie Carlisle of Skippers, VA; And her brothers: James Carlisle of Roanoke Rapids; Walter "Butch" Carlisle and wife, Beverly. She also leaves behind with a plethora of nieces, nephews, and their families along with so many dear friends in North Carolina and California who will mourn her loss.

Services will be held at the Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church at 2267 W 10th St. in Roanoke Rapids on Friday, January 20th at 2pm followed by a graveside service at Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will also receive visitors on Thursday, January 19th, from 7 to 8:30pm at Hockaday Funeral Home at 507 US 158 in Roanoke Rapids.

Donnie David Shearin, Sr. 78, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at home.

Donnie was born August 23, 1938 in Halifax County to the late Ivey Pittard Shearin and Geneva Newsome Shearin. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Ann Shearin; his son, Donnie Shearin, Jr.; his grandson, Dustin Urbahns.

Donnie loved his family, loved working on chainsaws. He was a hard worker who loved a challenge, He made many friends during his career working on chainsaws. Donnie also took great care of his mother after his father died.

He is survived by his children, Deborah Urbahns, Donna Dunlow and her husband Keith, Todd Shearin and Michael Shearin and his wife Nicole all of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren, Audrey Dunlow, Austin and
Kinley Shearin, David Mooney and David Taylor; his brother, Dennis Terry Shearin and his partner Glenn Custer of Amhurst, VA; his sister, Joan Ivey and her husband Milton of Roanoke Rapids; his nephew, Jeffrey Dixon; his great nieces, Kelly and Caitlyn Dixon.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Cedarwood Cemetery with Bane Angles, Minister officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the home of his daughter, Donna Dunlow. Arrangements are being handled by Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

James Henry Peede, Sr., 76, died at his home Saturday, January 21, 2017.

James was born in Northampton County, May 20, 1940, to the late Celia Vera Peede Deaton.

He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, and loved painting.

In addition to his mother, James was preceded in death by his step father, Sherman Deaton, his brother Edgar J.Gums Jr. and his son, Thomas Peede.

Surviving are his wife, Lula Miles Peede of the home; sons, James H. Peede, Jr. and Sherman Miles Peede, both of Roanoke Rapids; daughters, Terry Robinson of Roanoke Rapids, and Marie Cox and husband, Lewis, of Garysburg; brother, Robert “Bobby” Gums and wife, Nancy, of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Timmy Robinson, Jr., Jeffrey Robinson, Suzanne Holt, Collette Davis and Emily Cox; great grandchildren, Trey Robinson, Liam Robinson, Brody Holt and Carleigh Holt. Also surviving, is his faithful dog and buddy, Brandy.

Aldine Cobb Parks, 77, of Valley Drive, Roanoke Rapids passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Aldine was born November 15, 1939 in Halifax County to the late Sam Cobb and Blanche Barham Cobb. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Billy, Sam Hix, Preston, Bobby, Howard and Bunky Cobb; her sisters, Mary Lee, Opal “Sugar” Shell and Little Sister Cobb.

Aldine was a lifelong member of Roanoke Rapids First Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was also a dedicated worker who spent 25 years at Champion International and another 32 years at Patch Rubber.

She is survived by her husband, Perry Parks, Sr. of the home; her sons, Perry Parks, Jr. and Jeff Parks both of Roanoke Rapids; her grandchildren; Kirklyn Parks and Camden Parks; her sister, Maxine Waters and her husband Moody Waters of Greer, SC.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, January 29, 2017 at the Roanoke Rapids First Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Richard Moody Waters and Rev. Matthew Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

Kenneth Edward Brantley

Kenneth Edward Brantley, 88, of Highway 158, Roanoke Rapids passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Brantley was born May 3, 1928 in Nash County to the late Edwin Brantley and Addie Carter Brantley. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Elgie Lewis Brantley; his grandson, Franklin Brantley Parrott; and his brothers and sisters.

Mr. Brantley was a longtime member, deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Bethlehem Baptist Church. He moved to Roanoke Rapids in 1956. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, served in the US Army in Korea. He graduated from NC State, ECU and NC Central University. Mr. Brantley was an agriculture teacher, Vocational Director and retired as Superintendent of Halifax County Schools. He also served his community as a Halifax County Commissioner, a Trustee on the Halifax Community College Board of Trustees, a director on the Board of WEZU Radio Station, a member of the Upper Coastal Plain Board, the Soil and Water Conservation District, longtime member of the Davie Lion’s Club and just recently had joined the Roanoke Rapids Lion’s Club. Mr. Brantley also was a longtime devoted member of The Gideon’s International spreading the word of God.

He is survived by his daughter, Joanne Parrott of Roanoke Rapids; his grandson, K.C. Parrott (Caitlin); his sister-in-law, Alice Brantley and her son Neil Brantley (Priscilla) and Ethlynd Hibbs and family; his brother-in-law, Alvin Earl Lewis and family; his nephew, Jeff Pinno (Eula) and family; his nieces, Janie Baker (Kenny) and Janette Murray (David) and their families.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 30, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. James Jenkins officiating.

Burial will follow at Bethlehem Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends Sunday, January 29, 2017 from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.
