Louis J. Cardamone

Louis J. Cardamone, 91, of Richmond Road, Henrico passed away Saturday, January28, 2017 at Signature Healthcare.

Louis was born October 28, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Joseph Cardamone and Concetta Angotti Cardamone.

Louis worked for the Nassau County police for 20 years. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was a loving Husband, Father and Grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Margaret Cardamone of Henrico; daughter Grace Hensinger and her husband William of Palmyra, PA; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Memorial Mass honoring the life of Louis Cardamone will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Father Pius Wekesa officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to America’s National WWII Museum, National Processing Center, PO Box 97336, Washington, DC 20090-7336, WWII museum website: nationalww2museum.org.

Betty Jo Horton Baird

Betty Jo Horton Baird, 73, died Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia.

Betty was born in Wayne County, NC, December 12, 1943, to the late William Banks Horton, Jr. and Ila Lue Fuller Horton. She was a home health nurse for many years and dearly loved her family. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Calvin Baird.
Surviving are her sons, Michael W. Baird of Roanoke Rapids, and William Calvin Baird and wife Jessica, of Littleton; sister, Linda H. Cannon of Emporia, and her grandchildren, Jacob Tyler Baird, Summer Cheyenne Baird, and Elizabeth Caroline Baird.
A graveside service will be Friday, February 3, 2017, at 3:00 pm at Crestview Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation prior to the graveside service from 1-2:30 pm and all other times at the home of her son, Calvin Baird.

Eddie Lee Rolfe Sr.

Eddie Lee “Pops” Rolfe, Sr., 78, died at his home on Hockaday Road Thursday, February 2, 2017.

Eddie was born in Mecklenburg County, VA, August 17, 1938, to the late Littleton and Sally Beth Rolfe. He was a “die hard” Nascar fan. Also, he and his family had a race team, Rolfe’s Racing #21. They raced on dirt and asphalt in Brinkleyville, Southern Nash, Wayne County, Robersonville, NC and Capron, VA. His strong work ethic allowed him to own and operate Rolfe’s Garage & Heavy Equipment Service for 25 years. His greatest love of all was his family. In addition to his parents, Eddie is preceded in death by his wife, Dianne P. Rolfe and daughter, Renee Rolfe.

Surviving are his sons, Eddie Rolfe, Jr. and wife, Susan, Randy Rolfe and wife, Ada, both of Roanoke Rapids, and George Rook of Wilson, NC.; brothers, Pete Rolfe and wife, Juanita, of Chase City, VA, Bill Rolfe and Walter Rolfe; sisters, Mary Toone and husband, Otis and Linda Rolfe, both of Union Level, VA; grandchildren, Chris Rolfe and wife, Sarah, Elizabeth Rolfe Story and husband, Tracy, April Rolfe Shaw and husband, Jeffrey, Sarah Rolfe Kerr and husband, Justin, Jody Rolfe and finance, Kristen. Also surviving are his great grandchildren, Madison Rolfe, Chasity Shaw, Natalie Finch, and Zoey Rolfe.

Dr. Dennis W. Gregory, Sr., will conduct a graveside service in Crestview Memorial Cemetery Monday, February 6, 2017, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation from 12-1:30 pm prior to the graveside service.

Tonya Marie Strickland Garner, 49, died Saturday, February 4, 2017.

Tonya was born in Roanoke Rapids, March 27, 1967, to the late James Strickland and her mother, Johnnie Hale Turner. In addition to her father, Tonya was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Aleise Hale and her daddy, Raymond “Puddin” Turner, Jr., and many Strickland aunts and uncles.
Surviving are her mother, Johnnie Turner; son, Nicholas Garner, both of Jackson; brother, Gray Turner and wife, Michelle, of Gaston, sister, Tammy Strickland, of Roanoke Rapids; William Cook, fiancé of Gaston; special sisters, Marsha Collier and the Collier family and Pam Hudson; niece, Ashley Park and nephew, Brian Vick and wife, Kelsey; aunt & uncle, Doris and Frankie Strickland, cousins, Tony and Jamie Strickland; special aunts & uncles, Patricia and Billy Taylor of Orlando and George & Elaine Hale of Gaston and her special cousins, John Turner and Terri Bethel, both of Jackson. Also surviving are many aunts and uncles, her Union Mission family and her church family at Doors of Praise of Worship, whom she loved dearly.
Pastor Russ Collins will conduct a service of remembrance Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at 7:00 pm at Doors of Praise and Worship in Gaston.

Alex Millard Cobb, 87, of 2847 Highway 48, Roanoke Rapids passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at Signature Healthcare.

He is the son of the late Alex and Zola Phelps Cobb.

He was a Sergeant in the Korean War. Millard also was a farmer for 40 years, owner of C & H Farm Supply, Roanoke Valley Cotton Gin, C & C Mobile Home Park and Heath’s Mobile Home Park. He served on the BB&T Bank Board for 20 years, North Carolina Farm Bureau Board for numerous years and a deacon at The First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Roanoke Rapids.

Millard is survived by his wife, Rachel Hodges Cobb; his son, Richard “Ricky” Cobb and his wife Jean Hinson Cobb; his granddaughter, Megan Cobb; his sisters, Maggie Dickens and Marie Thomason and her husband Marshall and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 2:30 P.M. Monday, February 13, 2017 at Crestview Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Barry Gardner officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home, 2847 Highway 48.

Mittie McGowan Glasgow, 69, died Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at Wake Med in Raleigh.

Mrs. Glasgow was born in Pitt County, NC to the late Clinton Bryan and Ella Mae Sumerlin McGowan.

A retired teacher and Girl Scout leader she was known to many people as Ms. M. Also, a member of Good News Baptist Church, Mrs. Glasgow taught many children about Jesus as an elementary Sunday School teacher and youth leader. She loved reading, cooking and tending to her many flowers.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Glasgow was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Carlton Glasgow.

Surviving are her daughter, Jennifer Glasgow Banks and husband, Andy, of Apex, NC; brother, Eddie McGowan and wife, Brenda, of Greenville, NC; sister, Linda Rose and husband, Buddy, of Tarboro; nephews, Chris Rose, David McGowan and family; niece, Ashley Hadley and family; mother-in-law, Lois Glasgow and sister-in-law, Susan Glasgow Genung and family.

The family will receive friends Friday, February 17, 2016, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service from 6-8:30 pm. Rev. Jimmy King will conduct funeral services Saturday, February 18, 2017, at 2:00 pm at Good News Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Community Center Baptist Church Cemetery.

Lindsey was born in Manning, SC, July 15, 1998, to Sergio Netro and Karina Rodriguez. She attended Northampton County Schools and worked as a cashier and hostess in the restaurant business.

Surviving Lindsey are her mother, Karina Rodriguez and Carlos Gaona; father, Sergio Netro; brothers, Misael Netro and Carlos Ivan Gaona; sister, Kaitlin Gaona, and her grandparents, Yolanda Lumbreas, Silvano Rodriguez, Alicia Altamirano and Rene Altamirano.

Pastor Ester Bonilla will conduct a service of remembrance Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service at 6:00 pm. The family will receive friends at 5:00 pm, one hour prior to the service also at the funeral home.

Frank Winston Quinn

Frank Winston Quinn, Sr., 82, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Quinn was born July 13, 1934 in Jeff Davis County, Georgia to the late Kennis Quinn and Maude Summerlin Quinn. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Louise Quinn, Faye Carter and Janice Ursrey.

Mr. Quinn was the manager at Quality Forest Products until his retirement. He loved gardening, especially his roses. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He served his country in the United States Coast Guard. He was a deacon in his church, where he loved working in his church and dearly loved his church family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Peggy Carr Quinn; his son, Frank Winston Quinn, Jr.; his daughter, Peggy Ann Quinn; his grandchildren, Frank Winston Quinn, III and Ashley Marie Quinn; two great-grandchildren; his brother, Wayne Quinn and his wife Glenda of Bainbridge, GA; his sisters, Ardith Quinn, Evelyn Quinn and Judy Clements all of Hazlehurst, GA and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Good News Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy King officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30 P.M. Saturday at the church. Burial will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, February 27, 2017 in Pineview Cemetery in Pinetops, NC. Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service is handling arrangements for Mr. Quinn.

Rachel Strickland

Rachel Strickland, 73, was granted her angel wings on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 in her south Weldon home.

Rachel was born December 3, 1943 in Halifax County to the late Robert G. Walls and Elizabeth “Libby” Carter Walls. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas B. “Red” Strickland; her brother, Robert “Buddy” Walls; her sister, Barbara Blake and her ever devoted son-in-law, Curtis Richardson, Jr.

Her life seemed too short to many but those who were touched by her understood that the quality of one’s existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. Her outspoken personality and stern hand and gentle smile will remain in our hearts forever. She enjoyed family, cooking and most of all gardening and yard work. Rachel spent 36 years working at JP Stevens, Bibb and Westpoint Mills. Her final days were spent surrounded by the warmth of close family and friends. Although tiny and frail she gave us all such courage and hope. She reminded us of the preciousness of life.

She is survived by her close friend, George Ivey; her brother, Ronald “Ronnie” Walls; her two daughters, Sheryl Barkley Mead Ormond and her husband James “Jay” of New Bern; Anita Strickland of the home; her son, Buddy “Buck” Barkley of Bicknell, IN; her grandchildren, Richard Barkley and Madrey Clay of Winston-Salem, Douglas Mead, Michael Mead, Darrell Mead II and his wife Leanna Bryant Mead, Amanda Richardson and Curtis Bryant Richardson; nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 24, 2017 at Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon with Rev. Roy Porter officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

Brett Livingston Stone Sr.

Brett Livingston Stone, Sr., 56, died Sunday, February 26, 2017, at his home.

Brett was born, March 12, 1960, in Spartanburg, SC. He was a master carpenter and, because of his skills, would always help others before himself. He was a sports fanatic, participating in softball leagues for many years. Brett was preceded in death by his mother and father, Peggy and Elliott Vincent.

Surviving are his sons, Brett L. Stone, Jr. and wife, Samantha, of Greenville, NC, Stephen T. Stone, of Roanoke Rapids; brother, Woody Vincent of Bay City, TX; sisters, Beth Sloan and husband, Todd, of Austin, TX, and Mona Stone of Roanoke Rapids. Also surviving is his grandson, Fletcher Elliott Stone.

The family will have a gathering of friends to remember Brett’s life at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 6-8 pm.

Gloria Anycia Hawkins Birdsong

Gloria Anycia Hawkins Birdsong, 76, of Birmingham, Alabama, and formerly of Valdosta, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on February 17, 2017.

Born and raised in Gaston, North Carolina, she graduated as valedictorian and then attended Petersburg General Hospital School of Nursing in Virginia.
She modeled excellence in nursing until she retired after almost 37 years of dedicated service from Packaging Corporation of America in Valdosta, GA.
A devoted mother and friend, she kept an open door to all who were in need of a meal or simply a listening ear.
She loved to cook, work in her flower garden and as a surprise to many, she was a gifted pianist.
However, her greatest joy was found in giving to others, especially an encouraging word or a good laugh.
Gloria is preceded in death by her father, Clifton Daniel Hawkins.
She is survived by her children, Nona Lynne Price (Connie), Charles Lucas Birdsong, and Elizabeth Birdsong Hendrix (Chip); eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Survivors also include her former husband, Charles W. Birdsong; her mother, Mary Lucas Hawkins; and her sister, Barbara Furlough (Bob); two nieces and a nephew.
A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Hockaday Funeral Services with Pastor Jeremy Kobernat officiating, 507 Hwy. 158 West, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Paula Blanton Conner, 70, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at her home in Calabash, NC.

She was born April 21, 1947 in Patterson, NJ, to Florence Constantino and the late Buck Blanton. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Frank Constantino; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Pinkie and Atkins Conner; Luther “Push” Conner, Wilbert Conner, Russell and Imma Conner, Betty Hardee.

She was employed at J. P. Stevens for 26 years, Nash General Hospital and Fountain Correctional Center for 7 years until her retirement. She also attended HCC and received her Phlebotomy Degree at Southside Community College and received her LPN Degree. After moving to Calabash she worked for Care Here of Myrtle Beach, SC.

She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Miles Conner; her children, Tracie Hayes Hammack (Bruce), Buddy Hayes (Traci) Barbara Hayes Jenkins (Ronnie), Cheryl Ryder (Michael) and Todd Conner; her grandchildren, Matthew Pike (Tracee), Whitney P. Huggins (Brandon), Brandon Hayes (Alexis) and Kristopher Cabiness (Amanda), Jody Cabiness (Rebecca) and Brent Hayes; her great-grandchildren, Hayley Pike, MyKinzey Pike, Jaden Pike, Brilynn Pike, Cenya Pike, Cyzon Pike, Alexus Hayes, Jayden Hayes, Kati Cabiness, Alyssa Kempe, Levi Cabiness and Colby Ryder; her siblings, Pat Glinsbecker, Valerie C. Duffy and Beth C. Malone; her half-sisters, Seretha Carroll, Ann Wright, Betsey Blanton Wilson and Kim Blanton Simmons; her nephews, Taylor Duffy and Ryan Duffy; her friend, Katie Conner; her pets, Angel and Missy.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Crestview Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Jim Whitehead officiating. Dorothy Lee Pepper Green

Dorothy Lee Pepper Green, 98, died Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC.

Mrs. Green was born in Halifax County, May 28, 1918, to the late Bernard and Maggie Shaw Pepper.

She was a long time member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 28 years and had a great deal of influence on her Sunday School students. She was revered and respected by her Pastors. They often came to her for advice in their ministry.

She loved her family, and was extremely proud of her children. She loved sewing and making things, angels in particular, and she would give those angels to people all over the United States.

She loved being outside, taking care of her flowers and mowing her grass and she did this well into her 90’s. She also had a love for the mountains.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Green was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Green, Sr.; daughter, Carolyn Greene Johnson; brother, Reginald Pepper; two sisters, Clarice Shaw, and Lillie Belle Andleton.

Surviving are her sons, Richard Greene, Jr. of Red Oak, NC and Charles Greene and wife, Susan, of Roanoke Rapids; brothers, Francis Pepper and Joe Pepper, both of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson Bryant, Lindsey Greene, Travis Greene and wife, Rebecca; great- grandchildren, Adrienne and Jasmine Bowser and Justice Greene. Also surviving are many, many special friends.

The family will receive friends Monday, March 6, 2017, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service from 7-8:30 pm and all other times at the home. Revs. C.J. Griffin, Randy Martin and Annie Marie Smith will conduct funeral services Tuesday, March 7, 2017 in the chapel at Hockaday at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Margie Day Jenkins, 83, died March 8, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

She was born, November 10, 1933, to the late Jesse and Louise Day.

Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph W. Jenkins, Sr; son, Robert Wayne Jenkins, and her grandsons, Christopher Thomas Thompson and Brandon Daniel Jenkins.

The joy of her life was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed attending church at The Little Country Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids.
She participated in Sunday School worship and many activities.
Margie graduated from Littleton High School and worked at Clarkes Department Store for many years until their closing.
She enjoyed the beach, family gatherings and holidays where she loved cooking her traditional favorites. Her family looked forward to her rendition of their birthday song every year.

Margie is survived by her daughters, Linda Langley and Margie Ann Thompson and husband, Tommy; sons, Jesse Jenkins, (Juli); Joseph W. Jenkins, Jr., special friends, Sharon, Buster and Elvis; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Matthew and wife, Kathleen, Angela ( Mike), Joseph “J.W.” (Brandi), Marie and Briana; great-grandchildren, Ayden, Leanna, Haley-Brooke, Dillon, Haydon, Brantly, Taylor, Chasity, Damien, Ashley and Carson. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Friday, March 10, 2017 from 6:00 -8:00 P.M. and all other times at Margie’s home. Rev. James Jenkins will conduct funeral services 11:00 A.M, Saturday, March 11, 2017at The Little Country Baptist Church, 754 Thelma Rd. Roanoke Rapids, NC. Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery.

Steve Elliott Medlin, 60, died Friday, March 17, 2017, in Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Steve was born in Halifax County, NC, November 17, 1956, to Claude Mason and Mildred Kidd Medlin.

He was a veteran of 15 years having served his country in the United States Air Force. He loved fishing, playing golf, painting pictures and singing to old school classic country music.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Claude Mason Medlin.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Ruth Waters Medlin; children, Sabrina Matthews, Susan Wright and husband, Eddie, and Steve Medlin and wife, Angela; sisters, Shelia Medlin, Sandy Joyner and Sara Shaw and husband, Walter; brother, Sammy Medlin and wife, Dawn Speed; grandchildren, Ian Bundy, Kelly Medlin, Stephanie Tanner, Brandon Medlin, Stephen Tanner and Kandice Medlin. Also surviving is his beloved dog, Baby.

Nancy was born in Halifax County, February 18, 1949, to the late Leonard and Mildred Oliver.

She loved her children and grandchildren with all her heart.

In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Earl Powers, Sr. and her sisters, Helen O. Vincent and Barbara O. Harris.

Surviving are her sons, Kenneth E. Powers, Jr. and wife, Sharon, and Timmy Powers and wife, Sarah, both of Roanoke Rapids; daughters, Tammy Powers Carroll and husband, Ken, of Littleton and Cindy P. Deberry and husband, Dean, and brother, Ray Oliver, both of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Randy Davis, Brittany Matthews, Kelly Powers, Nicole Deberry, Eric Deberry, and Kendall Powers. Also surviving are her great grandchildren, Norma Jean Lassiter, Jayden McKenzie, Kate and Layla Johnson.

Mildred Lee Abernathy Hamill, 90, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Signature Healthcare.

Mrs. Hamill was born December 12, 1926 in Lee County to the late Paul Davis and Rosa Mae Nowell Davis. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Benjamin Abernathy and John E. Hamill; her son Ronald Lee Abernathy, her brothers, Charlie Davis, Harvey Davis and Samuel Davis; her sister, Peggy Reed; special niece, Barbara Reed Newsome.

Mildred’s primary interest in life was her family. She treasured her children and their families. She enjoyed celebrating holidays and special occasions with them. Mildred’s beautiful smile and personality drew people young and mature to her. Her kind loving nature will be remembered by many people.

She is survived by her children, Joan Abernathy Todd, Elaine Abernathy Whitby (Joe), Nancy Abernathy Finch, Donald Ray Abernathy (Becky), Judy Abernathy Myrick (W.T.), Rose Marie Abernathy, Ricky Lee Abernathy (special friend Jonee Callahan) and Roger Dale Abernathy; her special niece, Donna Reed; her grandchildren, Jason Todd (special friend Amy Hargrave), Lesha Jordan (Gene), Crystal Whitby Bennett, Bryan Finch (Christy Blanton), Kimberly Olivier (Desmond), Michael Abernathy (Katherine), Donald Abernathy (Tracy), Amy Myrick, Jonathan Lucas, Lindsey Myrick, Benjamin Abernathy and Meagan Abernathy; her great-grandchildren, Ashton Jordan, Jessica Jordan, Bryson Finch and Isaiah Myrick, Camille Myrick, Violet Abernathy, Desmond Olivier, Sydney Olivier, Colden Todd, Cara Todd, Mason Hunter Jordan and Caden Abernathy; her great-great grandchild, Kingslee Dickens; two special nephews, Robert Newsome and Jake Newsome; her special caregivers, Jessica Fahey Balmer and Daphne Gibson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 23, 2017 at Victory Baptist Church with Rev. Jeremy Kobernat and Rev. Jerry Waters officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home of her son Ricky Abernathy and the home of her daughter Judy Myrick.

Agnes Hawkins Gray, 91, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Gray was born April 13, 1925 in Halifax County to the late Garnet Hawkins and Effie Pepper Hawkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Gray.

She was a member of First Christian Church for 67 years.

Mrs. Gray is survived by her sons, Michael Gray and his wife Victoria of Canton, NC and Terry Gray of Roanoke Rapids; her grandchildren, Sara Gray, Benjamin Gray John Gray and Carly Jo Jones; her great-grandchildren, Neal Jones, Dylan Jones and Joseph Eli Gray; her niece, Mary Jo Bullock.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 29, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Bane Angles, Minister officiating. Burial will follow in Old Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 – 12:30 P.M. Wednesday prior to the service.

Roger Dale Abernathy, 53, of Brickell Street, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Mr. Abernathy was born, January 30, 1964, in Halifax County to the late Benjamin Abernathy and Mildred Abernathy Hamill. In addition to his parents, Mr. Abernathy was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Lee Abernathy; uncles, Charlie Davis, Harvey Davis, and Samuel Davis; aunt, Peggy Reed and his cousin, Barbara Reed Newsome.

Surviving are his two children, Benjamin Abernathy, and Megan Abernathy and husband, Dorian Mija; grandchildren, Caden Abernathy, Luke Askew, and MaKenzie Ann Rogers; siblings, Donald Abernathy and wife, Becky, Joan Abernathy Todd, Elaine Abernathy Whitby and husband, Joe, Nancy Abernathy Finch, Judy Abernathy Myrick and husband, W.T., Rose Marie Abernathy, and Ricky Lee Abernathy; cousin, Donna Reed; nieces, Lesha Jordan and husband, Gene, Kimberly Olivier and husband, Desmond, Amy Myrick, Lindsey Myrick, Crystal Whitby Bennett; nephews, Bryan Finch and wife, Christy, Jason Todd and wife, Amy, Michael Abernathy and wife, Katherine, Donald Abernathy and wife Tracy, and Jonathan Lucas. Also surviving is his beloved friend and caretaker, Elizabeth Massey.

A graveside service will be conducted Friday, March 31, 2017, at 11:30 am in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family is receiving friends at the home of Judy Myrick, 1509 South Street, Roanoke Rapids.
